Under Fire

Fire safety is something most businesses believe they have under control. There are usually fire extinguishers on the wall, maybe a few signs, and staff have a general idea of what to do. On the surface, everything seems in place.

But in reality, many workplaces are not as prepared as they think.

The biggest issue is that fire safety is often treated as a once-off requirement rather than something that needs to be maintained and understood. Equipment is installed, but not regularly checked. Procedures exist, but are not clearly communicated. Employees are expected to respond in an emergency, but have never actually been shown how.

A fire does not give you time to figure things out.

One of the most common gaps is with fire extinguishers. Many employees do not know what type of fire extinguisher to use, when it is safe to attempt to fight a fire, or even where the nearest extinguisher is located. In some cases, extinguishers are blocked, incorrectly mounted, or not serviced as required.

Another issue is evacuation. Businesses often assume that people will “just know what to do,” but without clear guidance, evacuation can quickly become disorganised. Employees may try to collect personal belongings, return to offices, or hesitate instead of exiting immediately. These delays can be dangerous.

Fire safety is not just about equipment — it is about behaviour and awareness.

Simple things like housekeeping, safe storage of materials, and proper use of electrical equipment play a major role in preventing fires in the first place. Overloaded plugs, flammable materials near heat sources, and poor maintenance are all common contributors to workplace fires.

There is also a misconception that fire safety training needs to be complicated or highly technical. In reality, even basic awareness training can make a significant difference. Knowing how to raise the alarm, when to evacuate, and when not to attempt to fight a fire are critical.

The goal is not to turn employees into firefighters. It is to ensure they can respond safely and correctly in the first few moments of an incident.

At Signature Safety ZA, fire safety is approached in a practical way — focusing on what employees actually need to know, how workplaces really operate, and how to ensure systems are not just in place, but understood.

Because when it comes to fire, preparation is everything. And in those moments, there is no time to guess.
